Group Discussion In SSB Interviews- How to do well ? Article by GTO of Defence Academy Coimbatore

Group Discussion at the SSB Interview

This is the first of the 8 group task that you will face in a Services Selection Board Group Tests.

Your group would be of about 8 to 10 candidates.
The First GD, the GTO will give two simple topics for you to decide and the discuss.
This is done so that every one gets an opportunity to share his/her views about the topic in discussion.

What happens at the GD.
Here the group wants to find a leader. Hence every one is eagar to start first, and this ends up in shouting and no one is ready to listen to others.
Slowly the SUPERIOR or THE POTENTIAL Leader takes control and gives out his views others start listening to him.

Here the person who feels he is not very good in communicating gives in and starts listening. The superior or more knowledgeable person goes on and  finally takes the centre stage.

This happens with in the first 3 minutes of the beginning of the GD.
The GTO now is getting input from the speakers. Some of the qualities that comes out are

  •
  • Confidence of an individual
  • Flow of language
  • Knowledge on the subject
  • His ability to influence the group
  • Tolerance level
  • Ability to accept the criticism
  • Firmness
  • whether he gives chance to others or just a bulldozer.
In the second GD only one topic is given. here the GTO tells the group, that here is a chance for those who did not contribute to speak and take active part in the discussion.
The topic in the Second GD will be some what higher and requires some knowledge to speak . A person who has been regular in reading papers and who watches TV discussion will easily do well in this GD
Once again the person with some merit shows up and the leaders emerge to show up.

I would suggest that aspirants should practice during college or even in coaching centres more and gather enough confidence. Internet gives an ample coverage on any topic that you can think of.

PREPARATION  and gathering knowledge is essential to do well

To remove your shyness.
speak in a group that is much lower in expression than you
later move on to a group that is more vibarant

I would say start practicing amongest student who had studied in vernacular language
then you should join a group who are from public schools. You will notice the difference.
Get used to persons who are better than you and try to compete along with them.

Try  to speak in the beginning, say you should be with in the first three speakers.
This again depends on the topic. If you know the topic by all means take a lead and maintain the initiative
If not first listen and then contribute.

At Defence Academy we conduct minimum of 10 GD  in a  a week.
